Blog #3 - Grow Movement

Whilst at MaSP’s AGM, I asked the delegates if they had a partnership with Scotland to come and chat with me as I was interested to learn more about their work. Two delegates approached me at the end and mentioned they were from Grow Movement, an organisation who link entrepreneurs in Malawi with entrepreneurs from around the world to offer business advice.

Grow Movement have attended many of our meetings and Forums in Scotland so I knew of them well. Grow started working in Malawi in 2012 and now reach over 8,000 people with their support. Their work in Mzuzu is supported by the Scottish Government.

We first met William Sibande, who heads the Mzuzu office, who took us to meet five of the entrepreneurs Grow Movement work with. We met a woman who had a stationary shop, another had a market stall, another who ran a nursery in her community, one woman sold chicks and eggs, and another woman made her own soap!

Clement (Programmes Officer, Malawi Scotland Partnership) and Shadreck (Malawi Scotland Partnership) interviewed all of the entrepreneurs about their work and the impact Grow Movement had had on their business. It was inspiring to hear their stories, how they began their businesses and, even though they had all faced challenges, they were able to overcome them.

By working together in two-way, dignified partnerships, we can achieve anything.
