Malawi Funding Round Information Session

01 December 2017

An information session was held in Edinburgh on Wednesday 29th November on the Scottish Government's latest Malawi round.

Over 60 people attended the Scottish Government and Corra Foundation's Malawi Development Programme Funding Round Information Session in Edinburgh this week.

The Scottish Government launched the Malawi Development Programme 2018-2023 funding round on 3rd November.

Claire Tynte-Irvine, Head of the International Division of the Scottish Government, gave the welcome address. Joanna Keating and Ian Nicol spoke in more detail on the International Development Strategy and their vision and ways of working, the Malawian Government priorities, and changes to the current funding round.

Kirsty Norris and Callum Aitken from Corra Foundation talked through the eligibility criteria, the concept note and the application and review process.

Kathy Wright shared the support and resources available from the SMP, including collated learning from previous grant applicants, additional Malawian input, and projects looking for collaboration following a series of strand meetings held in November. Kruti Buch from The Alliance offered additional support on reviewing applications.

Some additional key points:

  • Collaboration and partnership is an important part of what the SG are looking for; as a small funder they want to see the impact of their work increase through projects that complement one another.
  • Potential applicants were encouraged to look not just at other potential projects from this round, but also to those funded through the Climate Justice Funds or International Small Grants, and to those working through the investment stream.
  • However there is no specific format or structure for partnership, collaboration, connection or complementarity; it is up to applicants how best to approach this.

It is critical to check the detailed Background and Criteria Notes and Guidance documents on the Corra Foundation website before submitting an application.
